Posted: 06 Sep 2015 10:44 AM PDT I enjoy going to Airshows. I love the sound of a jet in afterburner and the smell of Jet A. I admire greatly the precision of the pilots who work so hard. I went to the Canadian International Air Show #CIAS with fellow club member +Martin Weening. We arrived early setting our folding chairs on the boardwalk just west of the VIP tent area. The show opened with the Breitling Jet Team. This is a civilian team flying the Czech L-39 Albatros military trainer. The team were wonderful, performing complex aerobatics and crossovers. I shot over 2000 images but I'm not hopeful. Here is the only one processed thus far. The challenge with any airshow is the sky and where in the sky the aircraft are flying. At the show yesterday, the sun was high overhead and the atmospheric haze was brutally intense overhead and to the southern horizon. It gets considerably worse over the course of the show as demonstrators trail oil smoke and it just settles slowly, clouding the sky with muck that desaturates and sucks away the contrast. The sky to the north was a beautiful blue, but over the lake it was burnt out white and that's where the aircraft were performing. Because the sun was right there, a polarizer made no difference. A big lens hood was essential because the sun was very harsh. Seeing the light when we arrived, I set my hopes for great images aside and used the day to practice my panning and holding focus on things that flew past very closely. When the import finally finishes, I hope to find 10-20 keepers out of the lot. I'll post those that are worthwhile later on. This image is a single edit, but let's be clear that there is a LOT of post processing here. Because of areas of transparency and blown highlight edges, I used Topaz Remask 5 to cut a mask of the image so I could easily separate the plane from the sky. I had pushed in a stop and ⅔ in camera knowing that I would have to lift shadows and wanting to minimize noise when I did so. The sky was junk to start with and while this raised the exposure on the sky as well, it pushed the RAW to the edge of clipping but not over it. Had this been a JPEG, the whole thing would have been a blocky mess. By using a mask, I could use separate Adjustment Layers, one to pull down the sky and a separate one to work on the plane. I then used separate dodge and burn layers to enhance the logos and push down some edge highlights. A fair bit of work for an adequate image. The Breitling Jet Team were up first, and my hopes for better skies later in the day were dashed completely. By the time the Snowbirds came on, the sky was a muddy mess, filled with haze and the remnants of oil smoke. As I muttered to Martin more than once, there would be a lot of time in the digital darkroom needed to pull anything of consequence out. So it goes. For those who care about such things, I was at ISO 100 all day, shooting a Canon 7D Mark II with Canon's 100-400/4-5.6L II zoom lens. I had the lens between f/5.6 and f/7.1 for the duration. I'm selling the series 1 lens and Martin was shooting it as he is interested in it. More than once I missed the speed of the push pull zoom, but most all of my other zooms save one are twists and I need to standardize the neuro-muscular pathways so zooming becomes an unconscious act. It was starting to settle in by day's end. The pilots were all great and the show moved along very smoothly, even allowing for the regular approach and landing of Porter aircraft at the Island Airport. more to come... Posted: 05 Sep 2015 08:19 PM PDT Number One gives me a pressie for Father's Day and it reminds me of my Dad, passed away some years ago. Number One doesn't like being in a photo or even taking photos, he's going through that phase. On the other hand, I just had a look at all the photos I have of him, some on film before I got my first digital, the Nikon 775 Coolpix - a time when I gave up on my film SLR - I was shooting with point and shoot film cameras. One can say that I would have loved to be on target with some nice digital camera from his birth but we don't dictate circumstances. Anyway this photo is from 2007 - he's shooting me with an Olympus C-750uz, my second digital, and I'm holding the Kodak P880, my third digital. I can't remember this photo at all, but it's there on Google Photos. :) Thanks Number One. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
