| Posted: 30 Aug 2015 04:00 PM PDT The DSLR Bubble is about burst... or isn't it? In early 2012 (https://plus.google.com/+IngoMeckmann/posts/bzw2pr9E4Lk), I predicted the end of the DSLR in 2015 and here we are now and I think the end is near... I've been shooting Canon SLR's exclusively (except for my love for Leica's...) since I bought my first SLR back in 1991. I bought my first DSLR - the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT - in 2005, upgraded to the 5D Mark II in 2008 and finally bought the 5D Mark III in 2012. I've been waiting for a successor for some time now but I didn't want to upgrade to the 1D series due to its gigantic size and the new 5DS series could not convince me plus I didn't see anything new and exciting on the horizon from Canon... I therefore decided after lots of research to jump onto to the Sony bandwagon - like many Canon photographers before me - and bought the A7R II. I got the body just a few days ago and have yet to shoot my first frame with a native Sony FE lens but luckily there is an easy way to use my large array of Canon lenses thanks to the Metabones adapter. So far I'm really surprised (end excited) by the in-body stabilization and pleasantly surprised by the AF performance of some lenses that seem to work quite well in good light while others don't focus at all but thanks to Sony peaking manual focus aid and my experience with manual focussing from the Leica body, I was able to achieve some interesting results like this soap bubble with a reflection of our house. I will certainly publish more once I get the Sony glass... It would be great to have 3 strong competitors in the professional camera producer's market but I don't believe that Canon will be among them if they don't step up their game immediately but it might be too late already as Sony is really pushing it plus Nikon has been releasing the much better DSLR bodies in the last few years - the only exception is probably the 1D-X but I doubt that this type of high-end sports camera is enough to keep Canon in the game for much longer. I wouldn't be surprised if we start hearing talks about Canon being the next Kodak...
